Published Articles and Essays
I'm editor and publisher of The Writer's Notebook, as well as a freelance writer and editor with dozens of clips from my years writing for newspapers and magazines. I pride myself on attention to detail and deadlines, and most of all, a passion for the craft of writing and telling really good stories. In addition to my magazine and newspaper writing and editing, I write and edit nonfiction for kids, and have worked with a range of clients on catalogs, brochures, and Web copy. I teach writing workshops, and write fiction and poetry.
I'm adding new stories and essays all the time. As soon as the Ladies Home Journal piece is out, I'll post a link!
Below you'll find some of my favorite published articles and essays. Read on!
My experience base is broad: I’ve written essays, features, service pieces, 200-word blurbs, and managed a 400-item dining guide. I've also had a number of roles ranging from feature writer at a community newspaper to freelancer for a national consumer magazine, and from associate editor of a regional monthly magazine to copywriter of nonfiction books for kids.
I got my feet wet as a college journalist at the University Chronicle. I started out as a staff writer and spent my senior year working as the editor in chief of the twice-weekly publication.
After college I worked as a feature writer at the Savage Pacer and Prior Lake American, then moved into the world of magazines, taking a job as associate editor at Minnesota Monthly, Midwest Home and Garden, and Twin Cities Taste. I'm currently writing and editing non-fiction for children in Minneapolis.
Throughout this time, I've built my freelance career. My newspaper credits include the Chicago Tribune, the Star Tribune, the Rochester Post-Bulletin, the Monticello Times, and the St. Cloud Times, among others. My freelance magazine work includes stories published in Minnesota Bride, Sunday/Monday Woman, and others. I've also written for the Web, contributing regularly to AOL’s Digital City—Twin Cities website.
